3 Tips You Need To Know When Your Car Break Down or You Have An Accident

If Your Car Break Down

  • Stay calm – Don’t panic. Slow down gently.
  • Pull over safely – Get onto the shoulder/left side if you can. Avoid stopping on bends or near intersections.
  • Flick on your hazards – Let other drivers know straight away.
  • Make sure others can see you: If you’ve got a warning triangle, pop it 50–100m behind the car. At night, leave your lights on.
  • Stay inside if it’s busy – Keep your seatbelt on and wait for help.
  • Call for help – Roadside assist, your insurer, or 000 if it’s really unsafe.
  • Don’t muck around fixing big stuff – Only do little things (like a tyre change) if you know how and it’s safe.

  • Check if anyone’s hurt – Yourself, passengers, the other driver. Call 000 if needed.
  • Hazards on, move cars if safe – If they still drive, get them off the road.
  • Swap details – Make sure you both get: Name, phone, address. Licence number. Number plate. Insurance info.
  • Take pics & notes – Damage, number plates, the scene, road conditions, time and place.
  • Don’t admit fault – Just share info. Insurance will sort out who’s to blame.
  • Ring the cops if: Someone’s injured or worse. A driver looks drunk or on drugs. Cars need towing or there’s major property damage.Let your insurer know – Report it as soon as you can.
